“This 16 km loop near Muker offers stunning moorlands, ancient woodlands, and historical landmarks in North Yorkshire.”
Starting near North Yorkshire, England, this 16 km (approximately 10 miles) loop trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (about 1,640 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Muker, which can be accessed by car or public transport. If you're driving, parking is available in Muker village. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is in Muker, serviced by local buses from Richmond and Reeth.
The trail begins with a gradual ascent up Stony Hill. This initial section is characterized by open moorland, offering expansive views of the surrounding Yorkshire Dales. The terrain here is a mix of grassy paths and rocky outcrops, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. As you climb, you'll gain approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation over the first 4 km (2.5 miles).
After reaching the summit of Stony Hill, the trail descends into Ivelet Wood. This ancient woodland is a haven for wildlife, including deer, badgers, and a variety of bird species. The path through the wood is well-marked but can be muddy, especially after rain. Keep an eye out for the old stone walls and remnants of historical farmsteads, which offer a glimpse into the area's agricultural past. This section covers about 3 km (1.9 miles) and involves a descent of roughly 100 meters (328 feet).
Emerging from Ivelet Wood, the trail loops around Birk Hill. This part of the hike is relatively flat, providing a welcome respite after the earlier climbs. The landscape here is dominated by rolling fields and dry stone walls, quintessential features of the Yorkshire Dales. You'll pass by several small streams and may even spot some of the local sheep grazing. This section is approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) long and offers minimal elevation change.
The final stretch of the trail takes you back towards Muker, following the River Swale. This riverside path is particularly scenic, with opportunities to spot kingfishers and otters. The trail here is well-trodden and easy to navigate. As you approach Muker, you'll pass through traditional hay meadows, which are especially beautiful in late spring and early summer when the wildflowers are in bloom. This last section is about 4 km (2.5 miles) and involves a gentle descent of around 200 meters (656 feet).
The region around Muker is steeped in history. The village itself dates back to the Viking era, and its name is derived from the Old Norse word "Mjor-aker," meaning "the narrow field." Throughout the hike, you'll encounter remnants of the area's rich past, from ancient stone walls to old farm buildings. The trail also passes near the site of the old Ivelet Lead Mine, a reminder of the region's industrial heritage.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on course. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and provide peace of mind.
This loop trail offers a diverse range of landscapes and experiences, making it a rewarding hike for those looking to explore the natural beauty and historical richness of North Yorkshire.
