The trail begins near the village of Osmotherley, a quaint village known for its stone cottages and historic charm. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the North York Moors National Park, a vast expanse of heather moorland.
Around 10 km (6.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Blakey Ridge. This section offers panoramic views of the surrounding moorlands and valleys. The Lion Inn, a historic pub dating back to the 16th century, is located here and serves as a great spot for a rest and some refreshments.
Continuing on, you'll traverse Glaisdale Rigg, a ridge that provides stunning vistas of the Esk Valley. This section is approximately 15 km (9.3 miles) from the start. The ridge is known for its diverse flora and fauna, including heather, grouse, and occasionally, red deer.
The trail passes through areas rich in history. The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge is one of the oldest pubs in the region, offering a glimpse into the area's past. Additionally, the moorlands have been inhabited since prehistoric times, and you may come across ancient stone circles and burial mounds.
