From Brockenhurst, you can catch a local bus or taxi to Lyndhurst.
The trail starts near the picturesque village of Lyndhurst, known as the "Capital of the New Forest." As you begin your hike, you'll traverse through a variety of landscapes, including dense woodlands, open heathlands, and serene inclosures. Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll enter the Perrywood Ironshill Inclosure. This area is rich in history, having been used for iron smelting during the medieval period. Keep an eye out for remnants of old ironworks and charcoal pits, which are scattered throughout the inclosure. The dense canopy of oak and beech trees provides ample shade, making this section particularly pleasant during warmer months.
As you continue, you'll encounter a diverse range of flora and fauna. The New Forest is home to wild ponies, deer, and a variety of bird species. During spring and summer, the trail is adorned with blooming wildflowers, including bluebells and foxgloves. Be sure to bring a camera to capture the natural beauty.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach the Pignalhill Inclosure. This section is characterized by its towering conifers and tranquil atmosphere. The trail here is relatively flat, offering a gentle respite before the final stretch.

The forest's unique landscape has been shaped by centuries of human activity, including grazing, timber production, and military use during World War II.
As you near the end of the loop, the trail opens up to expansive heathlands, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The final 2 km (1.2 miles) are relatively easy, with gentle undulations leading you back to the starting point near Lyndhurst. This section is particularly beautiful during sunset, with the golden hues casting a magical glow over the landscape.
