The trail begins near the village of Kenton, known for its historical significance and charming architecture. As you start your hike, you'll pass by the Powderham Castle, a grand estate dating back to the 14th century. The castle is still inhabited by the Courtenay family and offers a glimpse into England's rich history.
At approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter Powderham Castle. This historic site is surrounded by beautiful gardens and deer parks. While the trail doesn't require you to enter the castle grounds, it's worth taking a moment to admire the architecture and perhaps plan a visit for another day.
Continuing along the trail, you'll reach the Exe Estuary around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark. This section offers stunning views of the estuary, a haven for birdwatchers. Keep an eye out for wading birds and other wildlife that frequent the area. The estuary is part of the Exe Estuary Trail, a longer route that connects Exmouth and Dawlish.
Around 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike, you'll arrive at the village of Starcross. This quaint village is known for its Brunel Pumping Station, a remnant of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's atmospheric railway. The station is a fascinating piece of engineering history and worth a brief stop.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time updates. The terrain is varied, with some sections being more challenging than others, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
The trail offers a rich tapestry of flora and fauna. In the spring and summer months, the hedgerows are alive with wildflowers, and the woodlands are lush with greenery. You might spot rabbits, foxes, and a variety of bird species, making it a rewarding experience for nature enthusiasts.
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail loop back towards Kenton, passing through open fields and offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This section is relatively flat, providing a gentle end to your hike.
This trail is a wonderful blend of history, nature, and scenic beauty, making it a must-visit for hikers of all levels.
