“Explore the Avon Dam Reservoir and River Avon Walk for stunning scenery, history, and diverse wildlife in Dartmoor.”
Starting near Devon, England, the Avon Dam Reservoir and River Avon Walk - Shipley Bridge is an 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) out-and-back trail with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This medium-difficulty hike offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and a variety of wildlife.
To reach the trailhead, head towards Shipley Bridge, which is accessible by car via the A38, taking the exit towards South Brent. From there, follow signs to Shipley Bridge. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Ivybridge, about 8 miles (13 km) away. From Ivybridge, you can take a local bus or taxi to Shipley Bridge.
The trail begins at Shipley Bridge, a popular starting point for many hikes in the Dartmoor National Park. From here, you will follow a well-marked path along the River Avon. The initial section is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead.
Shipley Bridge to Avon Dam (2.5 km / 1.5 miles): The first significant landmark is the Avon Dam, which you will reach after about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). The dam, constructed in the 1950s, is an impressive sight and offers a great spot for a short break. The reservoir it creates is a haven for various bird species, so keep your binoculars handy.
Avon Dam to Huntingdon Warren (3 km / 1.9 miles): Continuing past the dam, the trail becomes steeper as you ascend towards Huntingdon Warren. This section offers panoramic views of the surrounding moorland. Huntingdon Warren itself is a site of historical interest, once a thriving rabbit warren in the medieval period. The remnants of the old warrener's house and enclosures can still be seen.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Along the riverbanks, you might spot otters and kingfishers. The moorland areas are home to Dartmoor ponies, sheep, and a variety of bird species, including skylarks and buzzards. The flora varies from lush riverbank vegetation to hardy moorland plants like heather and gorse.
Given the varied terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The weather on Dartmoor can change rapidly, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. The trail is well-marked, but fog can reduce visibility, making navigation tools essential.
The return journey follows the same path back to Shipley Bridge. The descent offers a different perspective of the landscape, and the downhill sections provide a welcome respite after the climb.
This hike provides a rewarding experience with its mix of natural beauty, historical sites, and diverse wildlife, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
