“Experience breathtaking views and rich history on the challenging Mam Tor, Back Tor, and Lose Hill Loop.”
Nestled in the heart of the Peak District National Park, the Mam Tor, Back Tor, and Lose Hill Loop offers a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience. This 13 km (approximately 8 miles) loop trail, with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet), is renowned for its breathtaking views and rich historical significance. The trailhead is conveniently located near the charming village of Castleton in Derbyshire, England, making it accessible for both locals and visitors.
For those traveling by car, Castleton is well-signposted and can be reached via the A6187. Parking is available at several locations in the village, including the main car park near the visitor center. If you prefer public transport, Castleton is served by regular bus services from Sheffield and other nearby towns. The nearest train station is Hope, approximately 3 miles (5 km) away, with bus connections to Castleton.
The journey begins with a steady ascent to Mam Tor, also known as the "Shivering Mountain." This iconic hill stands at 517 meters (1,696 feet) and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Edale Valley and Kinder Scout. The summit is marked by a trig point, and on clear days, you can see as far as Manchester and the Cheshire Plain. Mam Tor is geologically significant due to its landslides, which have shaped its distinctive profile over millennia.
Continuing along the ridge, the trail leads to Back Tor, a lesser-known but equally stunning peak. The path here is narrow and can be steep in places, so caution is advised. From Back Tor, the route descends slightly before ascending again to Lose Hill. At 476 meters (1,562 feet), Lose Hill provides another excellent vantage point, with views stretching across the Hope Valley and beyond. The name "Lose Hill" is thought to derive from the Old English word "Hlose," meaning "pigsty," reflecting the area's agricultural past.
The trail traverses a variety of habitats, from open moorland to lush valleys, supporting a diverse range of wildlife. Keep an eye out for red grouse, skylarks, and the occasional peregrine falcon soaring overhead. In spring and summer, the hillsides are adorned with wildflowers, including heather and bilberry, adding vibrant splashes of color to the landscape.
The area around Mam Tor is steeped in history. The summit of Mam Tor is home to an ancient hill fort, dating back to the Bronze Age. This fortification, with its earthwork ramparts, offers a glimpse into the lives of the early settlers who once inhabited this region. Additionally, the nearby village of Castleton is famous for its Norman castle, Peveril Castle, which can be visited before or after your hike.
Given the trail's difficulty rating, it's essential to be well-prepared. The path can be rocky and uneven, particularly in wet weather, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so pack appropriate clothing and check forecasts before setting out. For navigation, the HiiKER app is an invaluable tool, providing detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and physical challenge, making it a must-visit for avid hikers exploring the Peak District.
