“Explore Hayfield's scenic beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife on this 10 km circular hike.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Hayfield in Derbyshire, England, the Hayfield and Thornsett Circular Walk is a delightful 10 km (6.2 miles) loop with an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters (984 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and charming countryside views.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Hayfield, which is well-signposted from the A624. Parking is available at the Sett Valley Trail car park. If you prefer public transport, the nearest train station is in New Mills, about 4 miles (6.4 km) away. From New Mills, you can catch a bus to Hayfield, with services running regularly.
The trail begins in Hayfield, a village known for its connection to the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass of 1932, a pivotal event in the history of public access to the countryside in England. As you set off, you'll pass through the village, where you can admire traditional stone cottages and perhaps stop by one of the local pubs or cafes for a quick refreshment.
The first section of the trail involves a gentle ascent through farmland and open fields. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including rabbits, pheasants, and a variety of bird species. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach the base of Lantern Pike, a small hill offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. The climb to the top is steep but short, adding about 100 meters (328 feet) to your elevation gain.
Descending from Lantern Pike, the trail leads you towards Thornsett. This part of the walk is relatively flat and takes you through lush meadows and alongside babbling brooks. Thornsett itself is a small hamlet with a few historical buildings, including an old mill that dates back to the 18th century. This is a good spot to take a break and enjoy the serene environment.
The final leg of the journey takes you back towards Hayfield, following the River Sett. This section is particularly scenic, with the river meandering through wooded areas and open fields. The path is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. In spring and summer, the fields are dotted with wildflowers, and you might spot butterflies and bees. The wooded areas are home to squirrels and various bird species, making it a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and moderate physical challenge, making it an excellent choice for a day hike in the Derbyshire countryside.
