As you ascend towards Seat How, the trail becomes steeper. This section offers panoramic views of the surrounding fells and valleys. Upon reaching the summit of Seat How, you'll have gained a significant portion of the elevation, approximately 300 meters (around 985 feet). The views from here are breathtaking, providing a glimpse of the journey ahead.
Continuing from Seat How, the trail leads you to the summit of Lord's Seat. At an elevation of 552 meters (1,811 feet), this is the highest point of the trail. From Lord's Seat, the trail descends slightly before ascending again towards Barf. This section is rocky and can be slippery, so take care with your footing. Barf stands at 468 meters (1,535 feet) and is known for its steep, craggy appearance. The summit offers unique views and a sense of accomplishment as you look back at the terrain you've covered.
The area around the trail is rich in history. The name "Barf" is derived from the Old Norse word "Barfr," meaning "bare hill." Historically, these hills were used for grazing sheep, and remnants of old stone walls and sheepfolds can still be seen. The region also has ties to ancient Norse settlers, adding a layer of historical intrigue to your hike.
The trail is home to a variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, deer, and numerous bird species such as buzzards and kestrels. The flora is equally diverse, with ancient oak woodlands, heather moorlands, and various wildflowers depending on the season.
Given the varied terrain and potential for rapidly changing weather conditions, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Ensure you have appropriate footwear, clothing, and supplies, including water and snacks.
The final leg of the trail loops back towards Whinlatter Forest Park. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the serene environment as you descend. Upon returning to the park, you'll find facilities such as restrooms and a café where you can relax and reflect on your hike.
