“A picturesque 13 km loop hike in Keswick offers stunning views, diverse flora, and rich wildlife.”
Starting near the charming town of Keswick in Cumberland, England, this 13 km (8 miles) loop trail offers a moderately challenging hike with an elevation gain of approximately 700 meters (2,300 feet). The trailhead is conveniently accessible by car, with parking available at the Gale Road car park. For those using public transport, Keswick is well-served by buses from major cities like Penrith and Carlisle, and from Keswick, a short taxi ride or local bus can take you to the trailhead.
The hike begins with a steady ascent towards Lonscale Fell. The initial climb is gradual but consistent, offering panoramic views of the surrounding fells and valleys. As you gain elevation, the landscape transitions from lush green fields to more rugged terrain. Keep an eye out for the diverse flora, including heather and bilberry, which add vibrant colors to the landscape during the blooming season.
At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Lonscale Peak. The summit provides breathtaking views of the Lake District, including Derwentwater and the distant peaks of the Helvellyn range. This is a great spot to take a break and soak in the scenery. The elevation gain to this point is around 400 meters (1,300 feet), so be prepared for a bit of a workout.
Continuing from Lonscale Peak, the trail leads you towards Skiddaw Little Man. This section involves a steeper climb, adding another 200 meters (650 feet) of elevation gain over the next 2 km (1.2 miles). The path can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Upon reaching Skiddaw Little Man, you'll be rewarded with even more expansive views, including a closer look at the imposing Skiddaw massif.
The descent begins as you make your way towards the Hawell Monument. This part of the trail is less strenuous but requires careful footing, especially in wet conditions. The monument itself is a historical landmark dedicated to a local figure, adding a touch of cultural significance to your hike. The descent covers about 3 km (1.9 miles) and drops approximately 300 meters (980 feet) in elevation.
Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for local wildlife. Red squirrels, roe deer, and a variety of bird species, including peregrine falcons and buzzards, are commonly spotted in this area. The diverse habitats, ranging from woodlands to open moorlands, support a rich array of fauna and flora.
The final stretch of the loop takes you through a mix of open fields and wooded areas, gradually leading you back to the trailhead. This section is relatively flat and provides a gentle end to your hike. The last 4 km (2.5 miles) are a great opportunity to reflect on the stunning landscapes and historical landmarks you've encountered.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on the right path.
