The trail begins near Wasdale Head, a charming village known for its traditional stone cottages and the historic Wasdale Head Inn. From here, the path ascends gradually towards Illgill Head, offering stunning views of Wast Water, England's deepest lake. The initial climb is steady but manageable, with the terrain consisting of well-trodden paths and occasional rocky sections.
At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the summit of Illgill Head, standing at 609 meters (1,998 feet). The panoramic views from here are breathtaking, with the dramatic scree slopes of the Wasdale Screes plunging into Wast Water below. On a clear day, you can see the peaks of Scafell Pike and Great Gable in the distance.
Continuing along the ridge, the trail leads you to Whin Rigg, about 2 km (1.2 miles) from Illgill Head. This section is relatively flat, allowing you to enjoy the expansive views without much effort. Whin Rigg, at 535 meters (1,755 feet), offers another excellent vantage point over Wast Water and the surrounding fells.
The descent from Whin Rigg is gradual, taking you through a mix of grassy slopes and rocky paths. As you make your way down, you'll pass through areas rich in flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for red deer, which are commonly spotted in this region, as well as a variety of bird species such as peregrine falcons and buzzards.
The Wasdale Valley is steeped in history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. The nearby Wasdale Head Inn is reputed to be one of the birthplaces of British rock climbing, with many early climbers using it as a base for their expeditions.
Given the varied terrain and potential for rapidly changing weather conditions, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Ensure you have appropriate clothing and gear, as the weather can be unpredictable, especially at higher elevations.
The final stretch of the loop brings you back along the shores of Wast Water, where you can enjoy the serene beauty of the lake and its surroundings. The path here is relatively flat and easy, providing a relaxing end to your hike.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and moderate challenge, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast exploring the Lake District.
