To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, Rosthwaite, a charming village in the Borrowdale Valley. There is parking available in the village, and from there, it's a short walk to the trailhead. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is also in Rosthwaite, serviced by buses from Keswick, which is well-connected by train and bus routes from major cities.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through Bracken Plantation, a serene woodland area known for its lush greenery and diverse birdlife. As you make your way through the plantation, keep an eye out for native species such as red squirrels and various woodland birds. The path here is well-marked and relatively easy to navigate.
After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach the base of Great Crag. The climb up Great Crag is moderately steep, but the effort is well worth it. As you ascend, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the Borrowdale Valley and the surrounding fells. The summit of Great Crag, standing at 440 meters (1,444 feet), offers a perfect spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing on, the trail descends slightly before climbing again towards Brund Fell. This section of the trail is particularly scenic, with open moorland and scattered rocky outcrops. Brund Fell, at an elevation of 473 meters (1,552 feet), is the highest point on the trail. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of Derwentwater and the distant peaks of the Lake District.
The area around Brund Fell is steeped in history. The Borrowdale Valley has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and you may come across ancient stone walls and remnants of old settlements.
