Point-to-Point
“Trek 18 kilometers of Cornish splendor, steeped in history and alive with coastal charm.”
Embarking on the Porthcurno to St Just Coastal Walk, hikers will traverse approximately 18 kilometers (about 11 miles) of Cornwall's most breathtaking coastline, with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (approximately 1640 feet). This point-to-point trail, rated medium in difficulty, offers a rich tapestry of coastal views, historical sites, and diverse wildlife.
The trailhead is located near the small village of Porthcurno, which is accessible by car or public transport. If driving, you can park at the Porthcurno car park, just a short walk from the beach. For those using public transport, buses run regularly to Porthcurno from Penzance, which is well-connected by train to other parts of the UK.
Setting out from Porthcurno, the trail immediately offers stunning views of the turquoise waters and sandy beaches below. The path climbs steadily, providing a good warm-up for the legs. Within the first few kilometers, hikers will pass the famous open-air Minack Theatre, perched dramatically on the cliffs. It's worth pausing to appreciate the theatre's unique construction and the panoramic seascape backdrop.
As the trail meanders along the coast, walkers will encounter remnants of Cornwall's mining heritage. The area is dotted with old engine houses and mines, some of which are part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rugged cliffs and heathlands are also home to a variety of birds, such as fulmars, cormorants, and shags, making it a great spot for birdwatching.
The trail is well-marked, but hikers should be prepared for some uneven terrain and steep sections. Using a navigation tool like HiiKER can help keep you on track and provide real-time updates on your progress. As you approach the halfway mark, the path descends to the charming fishing cove of Porthgwarra, a perfect spot for a rest and perhaps a picnic.
Continuing towards St Just, the trail becomes more rugged, with the Atlantic Ocean providing a constant companion to the right. Cape Cornwall, the only cape in England, marks a significant point on the route, where the Atlantic currents split. From here, it's a short distance to the finish line in the town of St Just. This small market town offers a range of amenities for weary hikers, including cafes, pubs, and bus services back to Penzance.
Throughout the hike, the coastal heathland blooms with wildflowers, especially in spring and summer. Keep an eye out for the rare Cornish chough, with its distinctive red beak and legs, which has made a comeback in the area.
The Porthcurno to St Just Coastal Walk is a journey through Cornwall's natural beauty, mining history, and cultural landmarks. With its moderate difficulty, it's accessible to most hikers who are prepared for a full day's walk. Remember to check the weather, tide times, and bus schedules before setting out, and enjoy one of Cornwall's most spectacular coastal adventures.
