“Embark on the Mount Edgcumbe Country Park Loop for stunning coastal views and rich historical landmarks.”
Starting your adventure near Cornwall, England, the Mount Edgcumbe Country Park Loop is a delightful 10 km (6.2 miles) journey with an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters (984 feet). This loop trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to the Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park, located near Cremyll, Torpoint, Cornwall PL10 1HZ. If you prefer public transport, take a train to Plymouth Station, then hop on the Cremyll Ferry from Admirals Hard, Stonehouse, which will take you directly to the park entrance.
The trail begins at the Mount Edgcumbe House, a historic estate dating back to the 16th century. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by beautifully manicured gardens and sweeping views of Plymouth Sound. The initial section is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the hike while enjoying the lush greenery and well-maintained paths.
Around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, the trail transitions to a coastal path. Here, you'll encounter rugged cliffs and panoramic sea views. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including seabirds and possibly seals basking on the rocks below. The path can be narrow and uneven in places, so watch your footing.
At approximately 5 km (3.1 miles), you'll reach Rame Head, a prominent headland offering stunning vistas of the English Channel. The elevation gain here is noticeable, but the effort is well worth it. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Eddystone Lighthouse. This spot is also home to the medieval St. Michael's Chapel, adding a touch of historical intrigue to your hike.
As you loop back inland, the trail takes you through dense woodlands. This section is around 7 km (4.3 miles) into your hike and provides a stark contrast to the open coastal paths. The canopy of trees offers shade and a serene atmosphere. Look out for native wildlife such as deer and various bird species. The terrain here is undulating but manageable.
Given the varied terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to keep you on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be reassuring, especially in the woodland sections where paths can be less distinct.
The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the loop bring you back towards the Mount Edgcumbe House. This section is relatively flat and offers a gentle cooldown after the more strenuous parts of the hike. You'll pass through more landscaped gardens and might even catch a glimpse of some of the estate's resident peacocks.
Mount Edgcumbe Country Park is steeped in history. The estate has been the home of the Edgcumbe family since Tudor times, and the house itself is a Grade I listed building. The park also played a role during World War II, serving as a strategic point for coastal defense.
Enjoy your hike through this beautiful and historically rich part of Cornwall!
