Aptly named as the bay resembles the profile of a wine glass, this is a stunning trail near to Coles Bay in Freycinet National Park, which passes through coastal woodlands, huge granite boulders and lookout spots before arriving at one of Tasmania’s most beautiful and famous views; the turquoise clear waters of the sea and white sandy beach of Wineglass Bay. There is an entrance fee to enter Tasmania’s National Parks which can be purchased online or at VIsitor Centres. The trail shares its starting point at the car park at The Fisheries, with two other hikes but it is well signposted and although a short hike of 3 miles it is graded as difficult. It is steep in places with sharp drops, as well as having many steps to climb up to WIneglass Lookout point, so you do need to be reasonably fit, although there are some resting seats along the trail. For more information on how we grade trails, please click here. All the effort in getting there though is more than compensated by the magnificent views from the top! Whales and dolphins can sometimes be spotted swimming in the bay and on the trail look out for wombats, wallabies and even Tasmanian Devils, all of which live here. It takes around 2.5 hours to complete, although caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here. This is a number one attraction and a very popular hike, plus the only way to get to Wineglass beach and lookout is by walking, so the path can get a little busy at times and the carpark fills up quickly in peak season; get there early to park and have some peace on the track. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, this is a trail for older children under supervision. Dogs are not allowed on this track. There are facilities in the Visitors Centre but take plenty of water with you on the hike and wear suitable footwear as the steps can be slippery.
