The 45 km Tongariro Northern Circuit hike is a breath-taking 3 – 4 day hike around active volcanic landscape at the heart of the Tongariro National Park and starts from Whakapapa Village. The oldest National Park in New Zealand, Tongariro it’s located in the centre of the North Island, recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. One of New Zealand’s Great Walks, this long-distance trail can be hiked in either direction and incorporates the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, taking in native beech woodlands, glacial valleys, and alpine lakes as it traverses the spectacular national park. It is recommended to hike during the Great Walks season between October and April when there are more facilities available, fewer hazards and huts and campsites available to book. For accommodation in any of the three huts on the trail, booking is essential. Hut facilities include bunks with mattresses, heating, toilets, and basic cooking facilities. Lighting is solar-powered, and there is cold running water. Anything else, i.e., food, cooking equipment, showers and bedding must be carried in and out. Campsites are a cheaper alternative and offer basic amenities including toilets and a water supply. The route is mostly exposed, uneven, and open to the elements. Additionally, volcanic risk is present, as well as geothermal activity along the trail, so it is strongly advised that hikers stick to the designated paths and do not stray for their own safety. Be prepared with plenty of food and drink, extra layers for changeable weather and sturdy footwear to manage scree slopes and steep climbs. It is also recommended to carry a head torch and a phone or communication device. From May to October this trail is only recommended for experienced hikers, equipped with alpine and navigational skills confident hiking with shorter daylight hours, through snow and ice and over avalanche terrain in extreme conditions. Being an exposed alpine environment where there is never certain phone signal and an area prone to adverse and changeable mountainous weather year-round, this route is advised as unsuitable for children under 10.
