The 13.4 km Ben Lomond Track is a breath-taking but challenging day walk near Queenstown in the Otago region on the South Island of New Zealand. A demanding out and back track that offers forest, wildlife and panoramic mountain views, the climb is constant and is not to be underestimated with a 1,438 m elevation gain to reach the Ben Lomond summit. This route is best walked from October to April, and has the option of three starting points, with this route taking in the Tiki Trail, starting near the base station of the Skyline Gondola, the track ascending through alpine vegetation and shrubland and leaving the toughest section to last - a steep rocky approach to the Ben Lomond summit at 1748 m. From the top on clear days both Mount Earnslaw/Pikirakatahi and Aspiring/Tititea can be seen with surrounding mountain peaks ad lakes below. Care should be taken in exposed alpine regions due to unpredictable and changeable weather. Be prepared with appropriate equipment, clothing, and check conditions before setting out. Also ensure that you have plenty of food and water for this strenuous full day trek. Based on our data, the trail is graded as hard. For information on how we grade trails, please click here.
