Starting near King County, Washington, this loop trail spans approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) with an elevation gain of around 2000 meters (6562 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the Mount Si Trailhead, which is accessible by car via I-90, taking Exit 32. From there, follow 436th Ave SE to SE North Bend Way, and then turn onto Mount Si Road. Public transport options include taking a bus to North Bend and then a short taxi ride to the trailhead.Trail OverviewThe Roaring Creek, Mount Teneriffe, Blowdown Mountain, and Mount Si Loop Trail offers a diverse hiking experience, combining lush forest paths, challenging ascents, and breathtaking summit views. The trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for experienced hikers looking for a full-day adventure.Roaring Creek SectionStarting from the trailhead, the initial part of the hike follows the Roaring Creek Trail. This section is characterized by dense forest and the soothing sounds of the creek. The trail gradually ascends, offering a moderate warm-up for the more strenuous sections ahead. Keep an eye out for native wildlife such as deer and various bird species. After approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), you will reach the junction with the Mount Teneriffe Trail.Mount Teneriffe AscentTurning onto the Mount Teneriffe Trail, the ascent becomes steeper. This section is known for its switchbacks and rocky terrain. The elevation gain here is significant, with about 1000 meters (3281 feet) over the next 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). As you climb, the forest begins to thin, providing glimpses of the surrounding mountains. The summit of Mount Teneriffe offers panoramic views of the Cascade Range and the Snoqualmie Valley. This is a great spot for a rest and some photos.Blowdown Mountain TraverseFrom Mount Teneriffe, the trail continues towards Blowdown Mountain. This section is less traveled and can be more challenging to navigate, so it's advisable to use HiiKER for accurate trail mapping. The terrain here is rugged, with several fallen trees (hence the name Blowdown Mountain) and uneven ground. The trail undulates, with minor elevation changes, over the next 4 kilometers (2.5 miles). This area is rich in flora, including wildflowers in the spring and summer months.Mount Si DescentThe final major section of the loop is the descent from Mount Si. This part of the trail is well-maintained and heavily trafficked, especially near the summit of Mount Si, which is a popular hiking destination on its own. The descent covers approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) with an elevation drop of about 1000 meters (3281 feet). The views from Mount Si are spectacular, with a clear day offering sights of Seattle and the Puget Sound. The trail winds down through dense forest, eventually reconnecting with the initial Roaring Creek section, leading back to the trailhead.Historical SignificanceThe region around Mount Si and Mount Teneriffe holds historical significance for the local Snoqualmie Tribe, who have lived in the area for thousands of years. The mountains are considered sacred, and the trails you hike today were once used by the tribe for hunting and gathering. The area also played a role during the logging boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with remnants of old logging roads and equipment occasionally visible along the trail.Preparation and SafetyGiven the trail's length and elevation gain, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and layers of clothing to accommodate changing weather conditions. Good hiking boots are essential due to the rocky and uneven terrain. Always check the weather forecast before heading out and let someone know your hiking plans. Using HiiKER for navigation will help ensure you stay on the correct path, especially in the less-traveled sections around Blowdown Mountain.
