Loop
“Wander through blooming meadows, tranquil woodlands, and historic Dutch farmhouses on this serene countryside loop.”
Starting from the vicinity of Jachthaven, a marina area near the heart of Wassenaar, this 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop trail offers a flat and accessible route with virtually no elevation gain, making it ideal for beginners or those seeking a leisurely walk. The trail weaves through the tranquil Dutch countryside, connecting the Sorghvliet Weg and Hooi Weg, two scenic rural roads that showcase the best of South Holland’s landscapes.
Getting There
To reach the trailhead, head towards Jachthaven Wassenaar, located near the intersection of Van Oldenbarneveltweg and the marina itself. For those using public transport, take a train to Den Haag Centraal and transfer to a local bus (such as Bus 43 or 44) towards Wassenaar, alighting at the “Wassenaar, Van Oldenbarneveltweg” stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the marina. Drivers can park at the marina’s public parking area, which is generally available except during peak summer weekends.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route follows quiet, paved and gravel paths, making it suitable for all fitness levels and accessible for strollers or bicycles. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and real-time tracking, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any temporary detours or updates.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Jachthaven Wassenaar: The marina is a lively spot, especially in the warmer months, with boats moored along the water and occasional local events. It’s a good place to grab a coffee before setting off. - Sorghvliet Weg: This stretch passes through open fields and meadows, with expansive views of the Dutch polder landscape. In spring and summer, look for wildflowers and grazing sheep. The area is known for its birdlife, including herons and storks. - Hooi Weg: As you transition onto Hooi Weg, the scenery shifts to more wooded sections interspersed with farmland. This road is lined with traditional Dutch farmhouses, some dating back to the 19th century, reflecting the region’s agricultural heritage. - Helmhorst: Near the halfway point, Helmhorst is a small nature reserve with a mix of woodland and wetland habitats. It’s a peaceful spot for a break, with benches and interpretive signs about local flora and fauna.
Nature and Wildlife
Throughout the hike, expect to see a variety of waterfowl in the canals and ponds, especially in the spring when ducklings and goslings are common. The flat, open fields attract hares and, occasionally, deer at dawn or dusk. The wooded sections are home to songbirds and, in autumn, mushrooms and toadstools.
Historical Significance
The region around Wassenaar has a rich history, with evidence of settlements dating back to Roman times. The agricultural landscape you traverse has been shaped by centuries of land reclamation and water management, hallmarks of Dutch ingenuity. Some of the farmhouses along Hooi Weg are protected monuments, offering a glimpse into rural life from previous centuries.
Trail Logistics
The entire loop is approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) with negligible elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet), making it a relaxed outing that typically takes 2–2.5 hours at a moderate pace. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, but limited facilities, so bring water and snacks. The trail is open year-round, though it can be windy and exposed in winter—dress accordingly.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER before setting out, as mobile signal can be patchy in the more rural sections. The trail is dog-friendly, but keep pets on a leash near livestock and in nature reserves.
