Loop
“Wander beneath cathedral pines and beside shimmering fens on this tranquil loop through North Brabant’s wild heart.”
Starting from the outskirts of the charming Dutch town of Oisterwijk, the De Pinsel Route offers a gentle 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop through the heart of North Brabant’s lush landscapes. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is perfect for walkers of all ages and abilities, making it a favorite for families, casual hikers, and nature lovers seeking a peaceful day outdoors.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen, a well-known nature reserve just east of Oisterwijk. For those arriving by public transport, Oisterwijk railway station is the closest major stop, with regular trains from Tilburg and ’s-Hertogenbosch. From the station, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to the reserve’s main entrance. If driving, parking is available at the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen visitor center, which is well-signposted from the town center.
Trail Experience
Woodlands and Wetlands
The route meanders through a mosaic of ancient woodlands and tranquil fens, a hallmark of the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen. Early on, you’ll pass through dense stands of oak and pine, where the forest floor is carpeted with moss and wildflowers in spring and summer. The air is alive with birdsong, and it’s common to spot woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional roe deer darting between the trees.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) in, the landscape opens up to reveal a series of picturesque vennen—shallow, peat-rich ponds formed during the last Ice Age. These wetlands are a haven for dragonflies, frogs, and a variety of waterfowl, including herons and grebes. Wooden boardwalks and well-maintained paths keep your feet dry while allowing close-up views of these unique habitats.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At roughly the halfway point, you’ll encounter the historic Padvindersven, a large fen bordered by reeds and birch trees. This spot is a favorite for birdwatchers and offers benches for a scenic rest. Interpretive signs along the route provide insights into the area’s glacial history and the traditional land management practices that have preserved these landscapes for centuries.
Continuing on, the trail skirts the edge of the Van Tienhoven Monument, a tribute to Jacobus Pieter Thijsse and other early Dutch conservationists who played a pivotal role in protecting the Oisterwijk forests. This area is particularly rich in biodiversity, with rare orchids and butterflies in summer.
Navigation and Safety
The De Pinsel Route is well-marked with colored trail posts, but for added confidence and route planning, HiiKER offers detailed maps and GPS navigation. The terrain is mostly flat and the paths are wide, making it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, though some sections near the fens can be muddy after rain.
Practical Tips
There are several picnic spots and benches along the way, and the visitor center at the start offers restrooms, a café, and information about local flora and fauna. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife. Insect repellent is recommended in summer due to mosquitoes near the wetlands.
The De Pinsel Route is a serene escape into one of the Netherlands’ most cherished natural areas, blending easy walking with rich opportunities for wildlife observation and a glimpse into the region’s conservation heritage.
