Embarking on the Dorps Weg and Eendekooi Weg hike offers a delightful journey through the picturesque landscapes of the Netherlands. This approximately 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) loop trail is predominantly flat, making it accessible for hikers of all skill levels.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of De Wijk in the province of Drenthe. For those traveling by car, De Wijk is easily accessible via the A28 motorway, with ample parking available near the starting point at De Havixhorst estate, situated at Schiphorsterweg 34, 7966 AC De Wijk. If you prefer public transportation, take a train to Meppel station, followed by a bus ride to De Wijk. From there, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
Trail Overview
Starting at De Havixhorst, a historic manor now serving as a chateau hotel and restaurant, the trail meanders through a series of stunning country estates and natural landscapes. The path is well-marked and primarily consists of flat terrain, making it suitable for families and casual hikers.
Points of Interest
- De Havixhorst Estate: Built in 1753, this manor house is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and serves as the starting point of the hike.
- De Wieker Meule: Approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter this charming thatched windmill dating back to 1829. It's a favorite among photographers and offers insight into the region's milling history.
- Dickninge Estate: Around the 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) mark, the trail passes through the 75-hectare Dickninge estate, designed in the English landscape style. The estate is home to various rare plants, including corydalis, wood anemone, and snowdrop.
Flora and Fauna
The trail traverses diverse ecosystems, including woodlands, meadows, and the Reest river valley. Keep an eye out for storks, especially near the 'De Lokkerij' stork information center, as well as other bird species native to the area. The Reest valley is also home to special plant species like marsh marigold and great burnet.
Historical Significance
The region is rich in history, with De Wijk first mentioned in 1383. The area is closely linked with manor houses such as De Havixhorst and Dickninge.
