Loop
“Bask in wide skies, tranquil waters, wildflowers, and echoes of Twente’s rural heritage on this gentle loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Almelo, near the recognizable landmark of Leemslagenplas, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently reached by public transport, with Almelo train station just a short bus ride away, and parking available near Leemslagenplas for those arriving by car.
Getting Oriented and Setting Out
The route begins by skirting the tranquil waters of Leemslagenplas, a former clay pit now transformed into a serene lake popular with local anglers and birdwatchers. Early on, you’ll notice the flat, open landscape typical of the Twente region, with wide skies and distant farmsteads. The path soon joins the Keurs Weg, a historic route once used for transporting goods between rural settlements and the Twente Canal.
Twente Canal: Engineering and Nature
At around 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail meets the Twente Canal, a significant waterway constructed in the 1930s to boost regional industry. The canal’s straight, tree-lined banks are home to waterfowl such as grebes, herons, and swans. Watch for kingfishers darting low over the water. The canal’s towpath is well-maintained and easy to follow, with benches at intervals for rest and observation.
Ypelo Rode Route and Woodland Sections
Turning south, the route merges with the Ypelo Rode Route, leading you through a patchwork of meadows and small woodlands. This section, roughly between 6 km and 9 km (3.7–5.6 miles), is especially rich in wildflowers during spring and summer, attracting butterflies and bees. The woods are home to roe deer and foxes, though they are shy and best spotted in the early morning or late afternoon.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
The area around Ypelo is dotted with traditional Twente farmhouses, some dating back to the 18th century. These low, thatched-roof buildings are characteristic of the region’s agricultural heritage. Informational signs along the route provide insight into the canal’s construction and the transformation of the landscape from peat bogs to productive farmland.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress. Surfaces are mostly gravel or compacted earth, suitable for walking shoes or trainers. There are no significant climbs, and the trail is accessible year-round, though sections near the canal can be muddy after heavy rain.
Facilities and Refreshments
There are picnic spots near Leemslagenplas and occasional benches along the canal. For refreshments, Almelo offers several cafes and bakeries within a short drive or bus ride from the trailhead. Public toilets are available at the start near Leemslagenplas.
