Loop
“Stroll beneath wide Dutch skies past wildflowers, songbirds, and centuries-old farms on this tranquil rural loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Hoge Hexel, this gentle 8 km (about 5 miles) loop follows quiet rural lanes and farm tracks, with virtually no elevation gain—making it accessible for all fitness levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Boomsweg and Oude Zwolseweg, just outside the village center. For those arriving by public transport, the nearest train station is Wierden, from which local buses or a short taxi ride can bring you to Hoge Hexel. Drivers will find ample parking near the village church or community center.
Route Overview and Navigation
The route heads north along Boomsweg, a peaceful country road flanked by traditional Dutch farmhouses and open meadows. Early in the walk, you’ll pass small patches of woodland and hedgerows that are home to songbirds and, in spring, a carpet of wildflowers. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the path veers east onto Oude Zwolseweg, a historic route that once connected local settlements and served as a trade path centuries ago. The flat landscape here is typical of Overijssel, with expansive fields and grazing livestock, offering wide views and a sense of tranquility.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At roughly the halfway point, you’ll encounter a small, centuries-old chapel nestled among oak trees—a quiet spot to pause and take in the rural scenery. This area is known for its rich agricultural history, with several farms dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Keep an eye out for traditional Saxon-style barns, characterized by their timber frames and thatched roofs.
Wildlife is abundant along the route, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. Hares, pheasants, and the occasional roe deer can be spotted in the fields, while kestrels and buzzards patrol overhead. The hedgerows and ditches are alive with frogs and dragonflies during the warmer months.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The entire loop is on well-maintained gravel and paved farm roads, suitable for walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots. There are no steep sections or technical terrain, and the total elevation gain is negligible—less than 5 metres (16 feet) over the entire route. The area is exposed, so bring sun protection and water, especially in summer. There are no shops or cafés directly on the trail, but Hoge Hexel village offers a few options for refreshments before or after your walk.
Navigation and Safety
Waymarking is limited, so it’s recommended to use HiiKER for reliable navigation and up-to-date trail information. Mobile signal is generally good throughout the area, but downloading the route in advance is wise. The trail is suitable for families and those seeking a peaceful countryside experience, with minimal road traffic and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the natural and historical character of the Twente region.
