Trail Overview and Navigation
The loop meanders through a patchwork of meadows, woodlands, and streams, with the Wenumse Beek (Wenum Brook) as a constant companion for much of the route. The path is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER provides detailed mapping and route tracking for this loop.
Highlights and Points of Interest
*Historic Kopermolen and Wenumse Beek* At the outset, the trail passes the Kopermolen, a centuries-old watermill that once played a vital role in the local economy, processing copper and grain. The mill is a testament to the region’s industrial heritage and is occasionally open for visitors.
*Woodlands and Meadows* After leaving the mill, the route enters a serene landscape of mixed woodland and open fields. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the path, and the gentle sound of the Wenumse Beek accompanies hikers. The area is known for its rich birdlife, including kingfishers, herons, and woodpeckers. Roe deer and foxes are sometimes spotted at dawn or dusk.
*The Wijer* Roughly halfway (about 6.5 km/4 miles in), the trail skirts the Wijer, a small, tranquil pond surrounded by reeds and marshland. This is a prime spot for a rest and some birdwatching, as waterfowl are abundant here.
*Rural Dutch Scenery* The second half of the loop traverses classic Dutch farmland, with grazing sheep and picturesque farmhouses. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make for easy walking, suitable for families and those seeking a leisurely day outdoors.
Practical Information
The entire loop is approximately 13 km (8 miles) with negligible elevation gain, making it suitable for all fitness levels. Surfaces are mostly unpaved but well-trodden, and waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches near the brook and pond. There are no significant climbs or descents.
Refreshments and restrooms are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. The nearest cafes and shops are in Wenum or Apeldoorn. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially near livestock.
