Loop
“Wander through fairytale castles, wildflower meadows, and timeless Dutch villages on this gentle countryside loop.”
Starting near the charming village of Vorden in Gelderland, this 15 km (about 9.3 miles) circular route is a gentle walk through the heart of the Dutch countryside, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy, scenic day out. The trail is well-marked and accessible, making it suitable for families, casual walkers, and anyone interested in a blend of nature, history, and culture.
Getting There
Vorden is easily reached by train, with Vorden railway station just a short walk from the village center and the trailhead. Regular trains run from Zutphen, which is well-connected to major Dutch cities. If arriving by car, parking is available near the station and in the village itself, close to the starting point at Stationsweg, Vorden.
Castles and Historic Estates
The route is renowned for its two iconic castles: Kasteel Vorden and Kasteel Hackfort. Kasteel Vorden, located just outside the village, dates back to the 13th century and is surrounded by a moat and lush parkland. The castle is privately owned but can be admired from the outside, and its grounds are a highlight at the very start of the walk.
Continuing along quiet country lanes and woodland paths, the trail leads you through the scenic Het Bilderspad, a landscape shaped by centuries of estate management. At around the halfway point, you’ll reach Kasteel Hackfort, a beautifully preserved 14th-century castle managed by Natuurmonumenten. The castle grounds are open to the public, and the surrounding gardens and water features are particularly picturesque in spring and summer.
Nature and Wildlife
The route traverses a mosaic of habitats, including ancient woodlands, open meadows, and tranquil streams. Birdlife is abundant, with chances to spot woodpeckers, nuthatches, and buzzards overhead. The meadows and hedgerows are alive with wildflowers and butterflies in the warmer months, while the forests provide cool shade and the occasional glimpse of deer or foxes.
Trail Navigation and Facilities
The trail is well-signposted, but for added confidence and detailed mapping, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any updates or diversions. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the castles and in the wooded sections. Public toilets and cafés can be found in Vorden village and at the Hackfort estate, where a small tea room offers refreshments.
Points of Interest and Local Culture
As you walk, you’ll pass through the quintessential Achterhoek landscape, dotted with traditional farms, thatched cottages, and tree-lined avenues. The region is known for its hospitality, and local produce—such as cheese, honey, and apple juice—can often be purchased directly from farm shops along the route.
The trail is accessible year-round, though sturdy footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches in the woods. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially near livestock and in nature reserves.
This hike offers a gentle immersion into Dutch rural life, with a rich tapestry of history, nature, and local charm at every turn.
