Loop
“Wander through blooming heaths and ancient woodlands, where history and wildlife quietly enrich every step.”
Starting from the outskirts of Apeldoorn, near the well-known Hoog Buurlo sheepfold, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk through the heart of the Veluwe’s heathlands and ancient woodlands. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s an accessible route for all fitness levels, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful day outdoors.
Getting There
By public transport, take a train to Apeldoorn station. From there, bus lines 108 or 400 head towards Hoog Buurlo; alight at the Hoog Buurlo stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead. If arriving by car, parking is available at the Hoog Buurlo sheepfold (Schaapskooi Hoog Buurlo), a well-signposted and popular starting point for local walks.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop meanders through the Lage Veld, a broad expanse of heath dotted with juniper bushes and bordered by mixed forests. The terrain is sandy and well-maintained, with wide paths that are easy to follow. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS tracks, ensuring you stay on course even where the heathland paths split or cross.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Grafheuvels (Burial Mounds): Around the 3 km (1.9 mile) mark, you’ll encounter several prehistoric burial mounds, or grafheuvels, dating back to the Bronze Age. These low, grass-covered mounds are protected archaeological sites, offering a glimpse into the region’s ancient human history. - Lage Veld Heath: The open heathland is a highlight, especially in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. The area is home to grazing sheep, managed by the nearby sheepfold, and you may spot shepherds guiding their flock across the landscape. - Woodland Sections: The trail alternates between open heath and shaded woodland, where Scots pine, oak, and beech provide habitat for deer, foxes, and a variety of birds, including woodpeckers and buzzards.
Nature and Wildlife
The Veluwe is renowned for its biodiversity. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to spot wildlife, especially roe deer and wild boar. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars for glimpses of rare species like the black woodpecker or the European nightjar. The sandy soils and heath support unique plant life, including rare orchids and sundews in wetter patches.
Historical Significance
The burial mounds are the most significant historical feature, marking the area as a site of human activity for over 3,000 years. The Hoog Buurlo sheepfold itself is a cultural landmark, reflecting centuries-old pastoral traditions that continue to shape the landscape.
Facilities and Tips
There are no cafés or shops directly on the route, so bring water and snacks. Benches are scattered along the trail, particularly near the sheepfold and at scenic viewpoints. The paths are mostly unpaved but firm, suitable for sturdy walking shoes. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash due to grazing livestock and wildlife.
This loop is a tranquil escape into one of the Netherlands’ most cherished natural areas, blending history, wildlife, and wide-open landscapes in a single, easy walk.
