“Stroll through historic gardens, tranquil waters, and vibrant meadows, where architecture and wildlife dazzle at every turn.”
Begin your journey at the grand entrance of Park Rams Woerthe, a stately park located in the heart of Steenwijk, Overijssel, Netherlands. The trailhead is easily accessible—Steenwijk railway station is just a short walk away, making public transport a convenient option. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the park’s main gates at Stationsplein, Steenwijk.
Park Rams Woerthe: Ornate Gardens and Historic Mansion
The first stretch of the hike leads you through the lush, landscaped grounds of Park Rams Woerthe. This park is renowned for its late 19th-century villa, Villa Rams Woerthe, a striking example of Dutch Art Nouveau architecture. The villa, surrounded by manicured lawns, ornate ponds, and mature trees, is a highlight for history and architecture enthusiasts. As you stroll along the winding paths, look for the intricate ironwork on the bridges and the stately sculptures dotting the gardens. The park is a haven for birdlife—keep an eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional kingfisher near the water features.
WaterReijkpad: Canals, Wetlands, and Local Wildlife
Leaving the formal gardens, the route joins the WaterReijkpad, a well-marked trail that skirts the edge of Steenwijk and heads toward the Ruxveense Vijver. The terrain remains flat throughout, with virtually no elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet), making it accessible for all fitness levels. The path meanders alongside tranquil canals and through patches of wetland, where reeds sway and waterfowl are abundant. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the ditches, attracting butterflies and bees. The area is known for its rich biodiversity—watch for herons, grebes, and, if you’re lucky, a shy roe deer grazing at the water’s edge.
Ruxveense Vijver: Lakeside Serenity
At approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles), you’ll reach the Ruxveense Vijver, a serene lake surrounded by woodland and open meadows. This is an ideal spot for a rest or picnic, with benches offering views across the water. The lake is popular with anglers and is home to a variety of fish and aquatic birds. The surrounding woods provide shade and are especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn golden.
Half Weg and Return to Steenwijk
Continuing along the Half Weg section, the trail loops back toward Steenwijk, passing through quiet residential areas and open fields. The route is well signposted, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to track your progress and ensure you stay on course. The final stretch brings you back to Park Rams Woerthe, completing the 7 km (4.3 miles) circuit.
