Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, ancient farm lanes, and tranquil woods on this peaceful Dutch countryside loop.”
Starting from the village of Molenhoek, just south of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, this loop trail covers approximately 17 km (about 10.5 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Molenhoek railway station, which is easily reached by train from Nijmegen or Venlo, and there is ample parking available for those arriving by car.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked and follows a mix of quiet country lanes, forest paths, and open fields. For navigation, HiiKER provides an accurate and up-to-date map of the loop, ensuring you stay on track throughout the walk.
Highlights Along the Route
Molenhoek and the Maasduinen
The walk begins in Molenhoek, a village known for its proximity to the Maasduinen National Park. Early on, you’ll pass through stretches of woodland typical of the region, with tall pines and sandy soil underfoot. The area is home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, so keep an eye out for wildlife, especially in the quieter morning hours.
Historic Lommertsteeg
Around the halfway point, the trail leads you onto Lommertsteeg, an old rural lane that has been used for centuries by local farmers and traders. The hedgerows and small fields here are remnants of traditional Dutch agricultural practices. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the path, attracting butterflies and bees. The Lommertsteeg area is also dotted with small, historic farmhouses, some dating back to the 18th century, reflecting the rural heritage of the region.
Open Fields and Heathland
As you continue, the landscape opens up to broad fields and patches of heathland. These open areas provide excellent views of the surrounding countryside and are a good spot for a rest or picnic. The heath is especially beautiful in late summer when the heather blooms in shades of purple.
Practical Considerations
There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the forest edges and open fields. Water sources are limited, so it’s advisable to bring enough for the day. The trail surface is mostly flat and firm, suitable for walking year-round, though after heavy rain, some sections may become muddy.
Access and Amenities
Public transport users can start directly from Molenhoek station, which is served by regular trains and buses. For drivers, parking is available near the station and in the village center. There are a few cafes and shops in Molenhoek for refreshments before or after your walk.
This loop offers a gentle, scenic walk through a landscape shaped by both nature and centuries of rural life, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Dutch countryside.
