Loop
“Wander through whispering pines and sparkling ponds, where history and nature paint a tranquil countryside escape.”
Nestled in the tranquil countryside near Nijnsel, just north of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, this 8 km (about 5 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk through the lush landscapes of Hazenputten and the Vresselse Bos. With virtually no elevation gain, this route is perfect for hikers of all abilities, families, and those seeking a peaceful escape into nature.Getting ThereThe trailhead is conveniently located near the parking area at Vresselseweg, close to the Sint Antoniuskapel (St. Anthony’s Chapel), a recognizable local landmark. For those arriving by car, set your navigation to Vresselseweg, Nijnsel, and look for the chapel as your starting point. Public transport users can take a train to Eindhoven, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 156 or 157) towards Nijnsel, disembarking at the “Nijnsel, Kerk” stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the trailhead.Trail ExperienceWoodlands and WetlandsThe loop begins by weaving through the Vresselse Bos, a forest planted in the early 20th century to stabilize drifting sands. Towering Scots pines and oaks line the sandy paths, providing ample shade and a sense of seclusion. The forest floor is often carpeted with moss and ferns, and in spring, wildflowers add bursts of color. Listen for woodpeckers and songbirds, and keep an eye out for roe deer, which are sometimes spotted in the quieter stretches. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail transitions into the Hazenputten area, a unique wetland dotted with small ponds and peat bogs. These pools are remnants of ancient peat extraction and now serve as vital habitats for amphibians, dragonflies, and a variety of waterfowl. Wooden boardwalks and small bridges make it easy to traverse the wetter sections, even after rain.Landmarks and Points of InterestAt roughly the halfway mark, you’ll pass close to the Dommel River, a slow-moving waterway that meanders through the region. The riverbanks are lush with reeds and wildflowers, and benches along the way invite you to pause and enjoy the scenery. The Sint Antoniuskapel, near the start and end of the loop, is a small but charming chapel dating back to the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the area’s rural heritage.Navigation and SafetyThe route is well-marked with local trail signs, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the loop and track your progress. The terrain is mostly sandy or packed earth, with occasional muddy patches in the wetland sections, so waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain. There are no significant climbs or descents, making this an accessible walk year-round.Flora, Fauna, and Seasonal HighlightsThroughout the year, the landscape shifts with the seasons. In spring and summer, the wetlands are alive with frogs and dragonflies, while autumn brings a golden glow to the forest as leaves change color. Birdwatchers will appreciate the diversity of species, from herons and kingfishers near the water to finches and tits in the woods.Historical ContextThe Vresselse Bos was originally planted to combat the drifting sands that once threatened local farmland, a testament to the region’s agricultural history. The peat bogs of Hazenputten are reminders of centuries-old practices of peat cutting, which shaped both the landscape and the livelihoods of local communities. This loop offers a serene blend of woodland, wetland, and river scenery, with easy access and plenty of natural and historical interest along the way.
