Loop
“Stroll through whispering woods, vibrant wildflowers, and timeless Dutch villages on this enchanting countryside loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Ruurlo, a charming village in Gelderland, the trailhead is conveniently located near Hengeloseweg, close to recognizable landmarks like the Ruurlo train station and the historic Ruurlo Castle. This makes access straightforward whether arriving by car or public transport. If traveling by train, disembark at Ruurlo Station, which is just a short walk from the starting point. For those driving, parking is available near the station and along Hengeloseweg.
Trail Overview and Navigation
Covering approximately 14 kilometers (about 8.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, this loop is ideal for hikers seeking a gentle, scenic walk through the Dutch countryside. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER is recommended as your digital companion.
Woodlands, Farmland, and Waterways
The path meanders through the lush Boswachterij Ruurlo, a managed forest area known for its tranquil beech and oak groves. Expect to encounter a patchwork of woodland, open farmland, and small streams. The forest is home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, including woodpeckers and tawny owls. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the trails, and the air is filled with birdsong.
At roughly the halfway point, the trail skirts the edge of Schutterstede, a small hamlet with traditional Dutch farmhouses and well-tended gardens. Here, you’ll find a few benches perfect for a rest or picnic. The route continues past small ponds and canals, typical of the Achterhoek region, where you might spot herons and kingfishers.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
Ruurlo itself is steeped in history, with the nearby Ruurlo Castle dating back to the 14th century. While the hike doesn’t pass directly through the castle grounds, a short detour at the start or end of your walk allows for a visit. The castle is surrounded by landscaped gardens and a moat, and today houses a museum dedicated to Dutch realism.
The Boswachterij Ruurlo was established in the early 20th century as part of a national effort to reforest and manage Dutch woodlands. Many of the trails here follow old forestry tracks, and you’ll notice remnants of historical land use, such as ancient boundary stones and drainage ditches.
Practical Information
The terrain is mostly flat and suitable for all fitness levels, with well-maintained paths that can become muddy after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially in wetter months. There are no significant climbs, making this route accessible for families and less experienced hikers.
Refreshments and toilets are available in Ruurlo village, both at the start and end of the hike. The village also offers several cafes and bakeries, perfect for a post-hike treat. Public transport connections from Ruurlo Station link to Zutphen and Winterswijk, making onward travel easy.
