Point-to-Point
“Stroll from castle moats to blooming heath, where woodland whispers and sweeping views paint every step.”
Starting near the historic Rozendaal Castle, this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) route along the Maarten van Rossumpad offers a gentle introduction to the rolling Veluwezoom landscape, with an elevation gain of approximately 100 metres (328 feet). The trailhead is easily accessible: if arriving by public transport, take a train to Arnhem Centraal and then a local bus (line 8 or 9) to Rozendaal, alighting at the Rozendaalselaan stop, just a short walk from the castle grounds. For those driving, parking is available near the castle at Rosendaalselaan 32, 6891 DA Rozendaal.
Historic Beginnings and Castle Grounds
The hike begins at the edge of Rozendaal Castle, a moated estate dating back to the 14th century, renowned for its ornamental gardens and the whimsical “bedriegertjes” (trick fountains). The castle itself is not only a landmark but also a testament to the region’s feudal past, once home to noble families who shaped the surrounding landscape. As you set off, the path skirts the castle park, offering glimpses of manicured lawns, ancient trees, and the serene water features that have delighted visitors for centuries.
Woodlands, Heath, and Panoramic Views
After leaving the castle grounds, the trail enters the Veluwezoom National Park, one of the oldest national parks in the Netherlands. Here, the Maarten van Rossumpad winds through mixed deciduous and pine forests, with the scent of pine needles and the sound of birdsong accompanying your steps. At around 2 km (1.2 miles), the path begins a gentle ascent, gaining most of its 100 metres (328 feet) of elevation as you approach the Rozendaalse Veld. This open heathland is particularly striking in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple hues.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife—roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds are commonly spotted, especially in the quieter morning hours. The area is also known for its sand lizards and, if you’re lucky, you might catch sight of a buzzard circling overhead.
Landmarks and Navigation
At roughly the halfway point, the trail passes close to the De Del nature observation tower, a wooden lookout offering sweeping views across the Veluwezoom and towards Arnhem. This is an excellent spot for a rest and some photos. The Maarten van Rossumpad is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress, especially at junctions where multiple trails intersect.
Descent to Gulden Bodem
The final stretch descends gently through beech woods towards the Gulden Bodem area, historically significant as the site of Arnhem’s old city waterworks and a former agricultural estate. The name “Gulden Bodem” (Golden Soil) refers to the fertile ground that once supplied the city with crops and fresh water. Today, the area is a peaceful green space on the edge of Arnhem, with the endpoint near the intersection of Zijpendaalseweg and Gulden Bodemlaan, close to the entrance of Sonsbeek Park.
Public transport from the endpoint is straightforward: Arnhem Centraal station is a 20-minute walk or a short bus ride away, making it easy to return to your starting point or continue exploring the city.
