Loop
“Meandering through storybook hills, heathland blooms, and historic Ootmarsum, this scenic loop radiates gentle charm.”
Starting from the outskirts of Ootmarsum, a charming town in the Dutch province of Overijssel, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) circular route weaves through the rolling landscapes of the Hazeberg and Kuiperberg hills. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy walk is accessible to most hikers and offers a gentle introduction to the region’s unique topography, shaped by ancient glacial activity.
Getting There
Ootmarsum is well-connected by public transport. From Enschede or Almelo, take a train to Oldenzaal, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 62) that stops at Ootmarsum Centrum. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the town center, close to the starting point at Kuiperbergweg, just a short walk from the Ootmarsum Openluchtmuseum.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route follows the Stuwwal Route and Hillingenpad, both well-marked and maintained. For precise navigation and real-time trail updates, HiiKER is recommended. The paths are mostly unpaved, winding through meadows, woodlands, and open heath, with occasional stretches along quiet rural roads.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
*Kuiperberg (approx. 1.5 km / 0.9 miles from start)* The first highlight is Kuiperberg, one of the highest points in the region at 71 meters (233 feet) above sea level. Here, you’ll find the Kuiperberg Water Tower and a panoramic viewpoint with a toposcope, offering sweeping views across Twente and into Germany. The area is dotted with historical boundary stones, remnants of the shifting borders between the Netherlands and Germany.
*Hazeberg and Surrounding Heathland (approx. 4 km / 2.5 miles in)* Continuing along the Hillingenpad, the trail enters the Hazeberg area, characterized by undulating heathland and scattered groves of oak and birch. This landscape is a haven for wildlife, including roe deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. In late summer, the heath erupts in purple blooms, attracting butterflies and bees.
*Historic Ootmarsum (start and finish)* The route begins and ends near Ootmarsum, a town with medieval roots. Its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and the Romanesque St. Simon and Judas Church are worth exploring before or after your hike. The town is also known for its vibrant art scene and open-air museum, which showcases rural life in Twente.
Nature and Wildlife
The trail traverses a mosaic of habitats, from open fields to dense woodland. Look for buzzards circling overhead and listen for woodpeckers drumming in the trees. The area’s sandy soils and gentle hills are a legacy of the last Ice Age, and the varied terrain supports a rich diversity of plant life, including rare orchids in spring.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
With no significant elevation gain, the route is suitable for families and casual walkers. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain, as some sections can become muddy. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, but limited facilities, so bring water and snacks. The trail is accessible year-round, though spring and late summer are particularly scenic.
