Loop
“Wander through whispering forests and blooming heath, where history and wildlife color a tranquil countryside loop.”
Starting from the tranquil forested area near Hoogengraven, just outside Ommen in the Overijssel province of the Netherlands, this loop trail covers approximately 9 km (about 5.6 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the well-known camping site “Camping de Hoogengraven,” which serves as a recognizable landmark for navigation and arrival.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Ommen railway station is the nearest major stop, serviced by regular trains from Zwolle and Emmen. From the station, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to the Hoogengraven area. If driving, set your navigation to “Camping de Hoogengraven, Hammerweg 40, 7731 AK Ommen.” There is ample parking available at or near the campsite, which is also a good spot to stock up on last-minute supplies or refreshments.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop meanders through the serene forests and heathlands typical of the Salland region. The terrain is mostly flat, with well-maintained sandy and forest paths, making it suitable for families, beginners, and those seeking a leisurely walk. The route is clearly marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed mapping and trail updates.
Nature and Wildlife
Expect to be surrounded by a mosaic of pine and deciduous woodlands, interspersed with open heath and small ponds. The area is home to a variety of birdlife, including woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead. In spring and summer, the heathlands burst into color with blooming heather and wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees. Early morning or late afternoon hikes may reward you with sightings of roe deer or foxes moving quietly through the undergrowth.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About 3 km (1.9 miles) into the loop, you’ll pass the historic Hoogengraven estate, a former manor house that once played a role in local forestry and agriculture. While the main house is not open to the public, the surrounding grounds and old farm buildings offer a glimpse into the region’s rural heritage. Further along, the trail skirts the edge of the Archemerberg and Lemelerberg nature reserves, low hills formed during the last Ice Age, though the loop itself remains flat.
Practical Tips
There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the halfway point, ideal for a rest or a snack. The trail is open year-round, but waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially during bird nesting season.
With its easy terrain, rich natural surroundings, and historical touches, this loop offers a peaceful escape into the Dutch countryside, perfect for a half-day outing.
