Loop
“Wander through ancient woodlands and vibrant heath, where history, wildlife, and tranquil landscapes intertwine.”
Starting from the edge of Veluwezoom National Park, just outside the charming village of De Steeg, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop offers a gentle, nearly flat walk through one of the Netherlands’ oldest and most diverse natural reserves. The trailhead is conveniently located near the well-known estate of Carolinahoeve, a historic farmhouse and pancake restaurant nestled in the woods, which serves as both a landmark and a welcoming rest stop.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, take the train to Dieren station, which is well-connected to Arnhem and Zutphen. From Dieren, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to De Steeg. If driving, parking is available near Carolinahoeve or at the Veluwezoom National Park entrances. The area is signposted, and HiiKER provides reliable navigation for the entire route.

The path meanders through a mosaic of heathland, ancient beech and oak forests, and open meadows. With virtually no elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet), the route is accessible to hikers of all abilities, including families and those seeking a leisurely day outdoors. The well-maintained trails are mostly wide and sandy, with occasional forest tracks that can become muddy after rain.
