Loop
“Stroll through peaceful meadows and vibrant wetlands, where history and nature intertwine beneath open skies.”
Starting from the tranquil outskirts near the village of Vasse in Overijssel, this 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of the Bruggenbeltweg and the Overijssels Havezatenpad, just a short distance from the well-known Erve Vasse, a historic farmhouse and local landmark.
Getting There Travelers arriving by public transport can take a train to Almelo or Oldenzaal, then transfer to a regional bus toward Vasse. The nearest bus stop is Vasse, Centrum, which is a 10-minute walk from the trailhead. For those driving, parking is available near Erve Vasse or along Bruggenbeltweg, with clear signage marking the start of the route.
Trail Experience and Navigation The loop follows a combination of quiet country lanes, forest paths, and open heathland. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked signs and waypoints. For added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and track your progress, especially at junctions where the Overijssels Havezatenpad intersects with local farm tracks.
Natural Highlights The route meanders through the Gagelmansveentje, a serene peat bog and nature reserve known for its rich biodiversity. Expect to see a mosaic of wetland plants, including cotton grass and sundew, as well as stands of birch and alder. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for marsh harriers, reed buntings, and the occasional snipe. In spring and early summer, the area bursts into color with wildflowers and dragonflies skimming the water’s surface.
Historic and Cultural Points Midway through the hike, the path skirts the edge of several historic estates, or “havezaten,” which are manor houses unique to Overijssel. These estates, some dating back to the 17th century, were once homes to the region’s landed gentry and played a significant role in local governance. The Overijssels Havezatenpad itself is a long-distance trail that connects many of these estates, offering glimpses of their grand architecture and landscaped gardens through breaks in the woodland.
Practical Tips The terrain is mostly firm underfoot, but sections near the bog can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are benches and picnic spots at several intervals, particularly near the halfway point by the water’s edge. Facilities are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. The loop is dog-friendly, but keep pets on a leash in nature reserve areas to protect wildlife.
This easy, scenic loop is ideal for a half-day outing, blending peaceful countryside, unique wetland habitats, and a touch of local history.
