Loop
“Wander beside shimmering lakes, wildflower meadows, and windmills on this serene North Holland polder loop.”
Starting near the tranquil waters of Blijkpolderplas, this 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop hike offers a flat, easy-going adventure through the scenic landscapes of North Holland, with virtually no elevation gain. The trailhead is conveniently located close to the village of Nederhorst den Berg, which can be reached by taking a bus from Weesp or Hilversum train stations—both well-connected to Amsterdam and other major cities. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the Blijkpolderplas recreational area, just off the N236 provincial road.
Route Overview and Navigation
The route combines the Peterburgser Route and Overmeer Route, forming a gentle circuit around the Blijkpolderplas lake and through the surrounding polders. Hikers can rely on the HiiKER app for precise navigation, as the area features a network of intersecting paths and waterways. The trail is well-marked, but digital navigation ensures you stay on course, especially at junctions where the Peterburgser and Overmeer routes overlap.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
The hike begins with serene views across Blijkpolderplas, a popular spot for birdwatching and water activities. Early in the walk, you’ll pass reed beds and marshy inlets, home to herons, grebes, and sometimes even kingfishers. At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), the path skirts the edge of the Spiegelplas, a larger lake known for its clear waters and recreational beaches. This area is a favorite among local swimmers and anglers.
Continuing along the dike, you’ll encounter the historic Overmeer polder landscape, shaped by centuries of Dutch water management. The flat, open fields are dotted with grazing cattle and traditional windmills, offering a glimpse into the region’s agricultural heritage. At around 5 km (3.1 miles), the route passes close to the village of Overmeer, where you can spot the old church tower rising above the rooftops—a reminder of the area’s long-standing rural community.
Nature and Wildlife
The wetlands and meadows along the route are rich in biodiversity. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the ditches, attracting butterflies and bees. The polders are frequented by lapwings, oystercatchers, and other wading birds, especially in the quieter stretches between the lakes. Keep an eye out for hares darting through the grass and, in the early morning or late evening, the occasional roe deer grazing at the water’s edge.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The entire route is almost completely flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. Paths are a mix of gravel, paved dike roads, and grassy tracks, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections may be muddy. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the lakes, ideal for a rest or a snack.
Getting There and Facilities
Public transport users can take bus 106 or 320 from Weesp or Hilversum to Nederhorst den Berg, alighting at the Blijkpolder stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead. Drivers can use the parking area at Blijkpolderplas, accessible from the N236. Basic facilities, including toilets and a small café, are available near the main beach at Spiegelplas during the summer months.
This hike offers a peaceful escape into classic Dutch polder scenery, with easy navigation via HiiKER and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the region’s natural and cultural highlights.
