Loop
“Wander through leafy parks, storied ramparts, and windmills, where Middelburg’s history and nature entwine.”
Begin your walk at the edge of Molenwater Park, a tranquil green space in the heart of Middelburg, Zeeland, Netherlands. The park is easily accessible, located just a short walk from Middelburg’s central train station—ideal for those arriving by public transport. If driving, parking is available at nearby garages such as the Kousteensedijk Parking Garage, only a few minutes’ stroll from the park entrance.
Exploring Molenwater Park and Noordbolwerk
The route covers approximately 8 km (about 5 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it suitable for all fitness levels and families. The path meanders through Molenwater Park, a lush urban oasis known for its mature trees, water features, and birdlife. Keep an eye out for waterfowl and songbirds, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
From the park, the trail leads onto the Noordbolwerk, a historic earthen rampart that once formed part of Middelburg’s city defenses. Walking along the Noordbolwerk, you’ll notice remnants of the old fortifications and enjoy panoramic views of the city’s picturesque canals and rooftops. The ramparts are lined with chestnut and lime trees, providing shade and a sense of history as you follow the gentle curves of the old city walls.
Windmills and Historic Landmarks
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll reach De Seismolen, a striking windmill dating back to the 18th century. This traditional Dutch windmill is still operational and occasionally open to visitors. Pause here to appreciate the craftsmanship and take photos of this iconic structure set against the skyline.
Continuing along the route, you’ll pass through quiet residential neighborhoods and green spaces before arriving at De Hoop, another historic windmill. De Hoop is a classic example of a Dutch flour mill and is often surrounded by wildflowers in spring and summer. Both windmills are significant landmarks, reflecting Middelburg’s rich agricultural and industrial heritage.
Nature and Wildlife
The trail is mostly paved or well-maintained gravel, making it accessible year-round. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of plant life, including wildflowers, reeds, and mature trees. The area is home to hedgehogs, rabbits, and a variety of birds—bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching.
