Loop
“Wander beneath whispering pines and Bronze Age mounds, where history and heather quietly embrace.”
Nestled in the tranquil woodlands near Apeldoorn, the Grafheuvels Loop offers an accessible 8 km (about 5 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it ideal for beginners, families, or anyone seeking a gentle walk through Dutch nature. The trailhead is conveniently located near the entrance to the Kootwijkerzand nature reserve, just off the N302, with parking available at the Kootwijkerzand car park. For those arriving by public transport, take the train to Apeldoorn station and transfer to bus 102 toward Kootwijk; alight at the Kootwijk, Kerk stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead.
Navigating the Route
The loop is well-marked and can be easily followed using the HiiKER app, which provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. The path meanders through a landscape of sandy heath, pine forests, and open grassland, with wide, flat tracks suitable for all fitness levels and accessible for strollers or wheelchairs.
Landmarks and Historical Significance
One of the most striking features of this hike is the series of ancient burial mounds, or "grafheuvels," dating back to the Bronze Age. These low, grassy domes are scattered along the route, with interpretive signs explaining their archaeological importance. The largest mound, located about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the start, is a highlight—pause here to appreciate the quiet reverence of this historic site.
Nature and Wildlife
The area is part of the Veluwe, one of the Netherlands’ largest nature reserves. Expect to see Scots pine, oak, and birch trees lining the trail, with open patches of heather that bloom purple in late summer. Birdlife is abundant; keep an eye out for woodpeckers, jays, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead. Early mornings or late afternoons may reward you with sightings of roe deer grazing at the forest edge.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
With a total elevation gain of less than 10 feet (0 meters), the terrain is mostly flat and sandy, with some sections of loose soil after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially if you plan to explore off the main path. There are no water sources along the route, so bring enough to last the entire hike. Picnic tables are available near the car park and at several points along the trail, making it easy to stop for a break.
Getting There and Facilities
By car, follow the N302 and look for signs to Kootwijkerzand; the car park is well-signposted and free. Public transport users can reach the area from Apeldoorn in about 30 minutes. There are basic restroom facilities at the car park, but none along the trail itself.
This loop is a gentle introduction to the Veluwe’s natural and historical treasures, offering a peaceful walk through a landscape shaped by both nature and ancient human activity.
