“Wander through timeless oaks, wildflower meadows, and storybook farmland on the enchanting Rondje Exel Loop.”
Starting from the charming village of Exel, just outside Lochem in Gelderland, the Rondje Exel Loop offers a gentle 18 km (about 11.2 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Exel village center, close to the intersection of Exelseweg and Dorpsstraat, which serves as a recognizable landmark for navigation.
Getting There Exel is easily reached by car, with parking available near the village center. For those using public transport, take a train to Lochem station, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 56 or 58) towards Borculo, alighting at the Exel stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the trailhead.
Trail Experience and Navigation The route is well-marked and follows a mix of quiet country lanes, forest paths, and open farmland. Hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail information, ensuring a smooth journey through the countryside.
Landscapes and Nature The Rondje Exel Loop meanders through the quintessential Achterhoek landscape, characterized by patchwork fields, hedgerows, and small woodlands. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through the Exel estate, a historic area with stately farmhouses and ancient oak trees. The estate’s origins date back to the Middle Ages, and its manor house, though not open to the public, is visible from the trail at around the 3 km (1.9 mile) mark.
Wildlife is abundant, especially in the wooded sections. Look out for roe deer, hares, and a variety of songbirds. In spring and summer, the meadows are alive with wildflowers and butterflies, while autumn brings a colorful display of changing leaves.
Points of Interest At approximately 7 km (4.3 miles), the trail skirts the edge of the Lochemse Berg, a low hill that, while not adding elevation, provides a scenic backdrop and is known for its heathland and pine forests. The area is steeped in local folklore, with tales of smugglers and hidden treasures.
Around the halfway point, the route passes through the hamlet of Klein Dochteren, where you’ll find traditional Dutch farmhouses and the occasional roadside stand selling local produce. This is a good spot for a rest or picnic.
Historical Significance The region around Exel has a rich agricultural history, with evidence of settlement dating back to the early medieval period. Many of the farms along the route have been in the same families for generations, and the landscape reflects centuries of careful stewardship. The Exel estate itself played a role in regional governance and land management, and its influence is still visible in the layout of fields and woodlands.
Practical Tips The terrain is mostly flat and well-maintained, suitable for all fitness levels. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. There are limited facilities along the route, so bring water and snacks. Public toilets are available in Exel village at the start and end of the hike.
For navigation, download the Rondje Exel Loop route on HiiKER before setting out, as mobile signal can be patchy in rural areas. The trail is enjoyable year-round, but spring and autumn offer particularly beautiful scenery.
