Navigating the Route
The Nettelhorst Route and Lochemse Bergen Loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the trail and track your progress. The loop meanders through the Lochemse Bergen, a low ridge of ancient sand dunes covered in mixed woodland, heath, and open meadows. The terrain is mostly flat, with wide, well-maintained paths suitable for families, casual walkers, and even those with strollers.
Nature and Wildlife
As you set out, the trail quickly immerses you in the tranquil woodlands of the Lochemse Bergen. Towering oaks and beeches line the path, their dense canopies providing shade in summer and a riot of color in autumn. In spring, the forest floor bursts into life with wildflowers and the calls of songbirds. Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. The heathland sections are home to butterflies and, in late summer, a purple carpet of blooming heather.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you’ll pass the historic Nettelhorst estate, a stately manor surrounded by landscaped gardens and ancient trees. The estate dates back to the 18th century and, while not open to the public, its impressive façade can be glimpsed through the trees. Continuing along the loop, you’ll encounter several glacial erratic boulders—remnants of the last Ice Age—scattered along the ridge, offering a tangible connection to the region’s geological past.
Midway through the hike, the trail skirts the edge of the Lochemse Golfclub, where open fairways contrast with the dense woodland. This area is a good spot for a picnic, with benches and open views across the rolling greens. The route then winds back into the forest, passing small ponds and marshy areas that attract frogs, dragonflies, and waterfowl.
Historical Significance
The Lochemse Bergen area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological finds indicating settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. The sandy ridges were shaped by glacial activity and later used for grazing and forestry. During World War II, the woods provided cover for resistance fighters and hidden shelters, and local information boards along the route share stories from this period.
Trail End and Return
The loop brings you back to your starting point near the golf club, where you can catch a bus back to Lochem station or return to your parked car. The entire route is suitable for year-round hiking, though waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches. For navigation, HiiKER provides up-to-date maps and trail conditions, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable hike through this scenic and historic corner of Gelderland.
