Trailhead and Access
The hike begins in the village of Barchem, located near Lochem in the province of Gelderland. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Dorpsplein in Barchem. Kale Berg
Starting from Barchem, the route ascends the Kale Berg, standing at 46 meters (151 feet) above sea level. At the summit, a wooden pavilion offers panoramic views extending towards Twente, the southern Achterhoek, and, on clear days, even into Germany. Descending from the Kale Berg, the trail passes by the Witte Wievenkoele, a site steeped in local folklore about ghostly apparitions known as "witte wieven." This hill is part of a glacial moraine formed during the penultimate ice age, resulting in the gently rolling landscape characteristic of the area. The Lochemse Berg is adorned with lush forests, providing a habitat for wildlife such as deer, foxes, and various species of woodpeckers.
