“Wander through enchanted woodlands, golden fields, and centuries-old castle views on this tranquil Dutch escape.”
Nestled in the scenic Gelderland countryside, this 10 km (about 6.2 miles) circular walk begins near the village of Zelhem, close to the well-known landmark of Kruisberg Castle. With virtually no elevation gain, this route is ideal for those seeking a leisurely stroll through a blend of woodland, farmland, and historic Dutch landscapes.
Getting There Zelhem is easily accessible by public transport. Take a train to Doetinchem station, then transfer to a local bus (such as Arriva line 24 or 51) towards Zelhem. Disembark at the Kruisberg stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead near Kruisberg Castle. For those arriving by car, parking is available at or near the castle grounds, which are well signposted from the main roads leading into Zelhem.
Woodland and Farmland The trail quickly immerses you in the Kruisbergsche Bosschen, a tranquil forest area characterized by tall oaks, beeches, and the occasional pine. The forest floor is often carpeted with wildflowers in spring and mushrooms in autumn. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and tawny owls, while deer and foxes are sometimes spotted at dawn or dusk.
After about 3 km (1.9 miles), the path transitions into open farmland, where you’ll pass traditional Dutch farms and grazing livestock. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, and the open fields offer expansive views of the Achterhoek region’s patchwork landscape.
Historical Highlights At approximately 5 km (3.1 miles), the route skirts the edge of the Sliek, a small nature reserve and wetland area. This spot is notable for its biodiversity, with rare orchids and dragonflies in summer. The wetlands have been shaped by centuries of local water management, a hallmark of Dutch rural history.
Returning to Kruisberg Castle The final stretch leads you back through mixed woodland, eventually returning to the vicinity of Kruisberg Castle. The castle itself dates back to the 14th century and, while not always open to the public, its imposing exterior and moat are worth a look. The surrounding estate features old carriage paths and remnants of landscaped gardens.
Navigation and Preparation The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the trail and check for any recent updates or diversions. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. There are benches and picnic spots along the way, but limited facilities, so bring water and snacks. The nearest shops and cafes are in Zelhem, about 2 km (1.2 miles) from the trailhead.
This easy, flat hike offers a peaceful escape into nature, with a touch of local history and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the Dutch countryside.
