Loop
“A gentle, colourful loop through Twente’s heart blends tranquil wetlands, canals, and rich Dutch heritage.”
Starting near Hengelo, this 21 km (about 13 miles) loop hike with virtually no elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet) offers a gentle journey through the heart of Twente, connecting the towns of Hengelo and Enschede. The trailhead is conveniently located near Hengelo railway station, making it easily accessible by train from major Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Zwolle. For those arriving by car, parking is available at or near the station and in surrounding streets.
Getting Oriented and Setting Out
The route begins in the urban outskirts of Hengelo, quickly transitioning into the tranquil Dutch countryside. The first few kilometers lead you along the banks of the Twentekanaal, a significant waterway constructed in the 1930s to stimulate regional industry and improve transport. The canal’s wide, calm waters are often dotted with barges and pleasure boats, and the towpath is popular with cyclists and walkers alike. Keep an eye out for waterfowl such as herons and grebes, especially in the early morning.
Kristalbad Nature Reserve
Around the 7 km (4.3 mile) mark, the trail enters the Kristalbad, a unique wetland area created as a water purification zone and wildlife habitat. This mosaic of ponds, reed beds, and meadows is a haven for birdwatchers—look for kingfishers, spoonbills, and sometimes even deer grazing at the water’s edge. Elevated boardwalks and bird hides offer excellent vantage points for observing the reserve’s rich biodiversity. The Kristalbad also serves as a natural buffer, filtering water before it enters the Twentekanaal, and is a prime example of Dutch water management ingenuity.
Rondje Hengelo and Enschede
Continuing south, the trail skirts the edge of Enschede, passing through a mix of farmland, small woodlands, and quiet residential neighborhoods. The landscape here is quintessentially Twents: flat, open fields bordered by hedgerows, with occasional clusters of oak and beech trees. At approximately 14 km (8.7 miles), you’ll find yourself near the outskirts of Enschede, where you can detour into the city for refreshments or continue along the marked path.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
This region of Overijssel has a rich industrial history, with Hengelo and Enschede both known for their textile and metalworking industries in the 19th and 20th centuries. Remnants of this heritage can be seen in the old factory buildings and canal infrastructure along the route. Informational signs along the canal and in Kristalbad provide context about the area’s transformation from industrial heartland to green corridor.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire route is well-marked, but for precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, including families and casual walkers. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the canal and in Kristalbad. Public toilets can be found at Hengelo and Enschede stations, as well as in some parks along the route.
Expect a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The trail is accessible year-round, though spring and early summer offer the best wildlife viewing and wildflower displays. Cyclists share some sections of the path, so stay alert, especially near the canal.
With easy access, minimal elevation, and a blend of natural and cultural sights, this loop offers a quintessential Dutch hiking experience through the Twente region.
