Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, ancient estates, and riverside paths—discover Salland’s tranquil countryside magic.”
Starting from the picturesque grounds near Schuilenburg, a historic estate just south of Hellendoorn, this 3 km (about 1.9 miles) loop offers a gentle, accessible walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for families, casual walkers, or anyone seeking a peaceful stroll through the Dutch countryside. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available at Landgoed Schuilenburg (Schuilenburgerweg 54, 7447 RP Hellendoorn). For those using public transport, take the train to Nijverdal station and continue by local bus or taxi to Schuilenburg.
Historic Estates and Waterways
The route is part of the Overijssels Havezatenpad, a long-distance trail that links several historic manor houses (havezaten) unique to the Overijssel province. Schuilenburg itself dates back to the 14th century and was once a fortified house, later transformed into a stately home. As you begin your walk, you’ll pass remnants of the old estate, including moats and restored farm buildings, offering a glimpse into the region’s aristocratic past.
Woodlands, Heath, and River Views
The Paarse Route leads you through a mosaic of landscapes typical of Salland: mixed woodlands, open heath, and lush meadows. In spring and summer, the heath bursts into color with purple heather, attracting butterflies and bees. The trail skirts the Regge River, a slow-moving waterway lined with reeds and willows. Watch for kingfishers darting over the water and herons stalking the banks. The river’s gentle curves and the surrounding wetlands are a haven for waterfowl and small mammals.
Navigation and Trail Features
Waymarking is clear, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any temporary diversions. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, suitable for all ages and abilities. Benches are placed at scenic spots, perfect for a rest or picnic. Expect a mix of gravel, grass, and woodland paths—sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when sections can be muddy.
Cultural Highlights and Local Wildlife
Along the way, interpretive panels share stories of the havezaten and the role these estates played in regional history. The area is rich in birdlife, with woodpeckers, nuthatches, and finches common in the woods. Roe deer and foxes are sometimes seen at dawn or dusk. The landscape is shaped by centuries of farming and water management, with traditional Dutch pollard willows and hedgerows lining the fields.
This short, easy loop is ideal for a leisurely outing, combining natural beauty, local history, and the tranquil charm of rural Overijssel.
