Loop
“Wander through Salland’s patchwork of heath, woods, and wildflowers, where nature and history quietly intertwine.”
Embarking on the De Hollander and Hellendoornsche Loop offers a delightful journey through the diverse landscapes of the Salland region in the Netherlands. This approximately 11-kilometer (6.8-mile) loop trail is predominantly flat, making it accessible for hikers of all levels.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near Adventure Park Hellendoorn at Luttenbergerweg 22, 7447 PB Hellendoorn. For those using public transport, from Zwolle, take a train to Nijverdal station. From there, local buses frequently run to Hellendoorn, stopping close to the Adventure Park. If arriving by car, parking is available at the Adventure Park, which is well-signposted from the main roads.
Trail Experience
Starting from the outskirts of Hellendoorn, the loop meanders through a patchwork of heathland, forests, and open fields typical of the Salland region. The terrain is predominantly sandy and flat, with well-maintained paths suitable for all fitness levels. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and real-time tracking, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any updates or diversions.
Nature and Wildlife
Expect to encounter a variety of landscapes, from dense pine and oak woods to stretches of purple heather in late summer. The area is home to roe deer, foxes, and a rich array of birdlife, including woodpeckers and buzzards. In spring and early summer, wildflowers line the trail, attracting butterflies and bees.
Points of Interest
About 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) into the hike, the path skirts the edge of the Hellendoornse Berg, a low sandy ridge that offers a subtle change in scenery and, on clear days, distant views across the Salland plain. At the halfway mark, you’ll pass close to the Regge River, a slow-moving waterway bordered by reeds and willows, where kingfishers and herons are often spotted.
Historical Significance
The region around Hellendoorn has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times. During World War II, the surrounding forests were used as hiding places by the Dutch resistance, and subtle reminders of this past can be found in the form of old bunkers and memorial plaques along the route.
Facilities and Tips
There are several benches and picnic spots along the trail, particularly near the river and at forest clearings. Public toilets and refreshments are available at the Adventure Park at the start and end of the hike. The trail is open year-round, but waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in nature reserves.
This easy, scenic loop is perfect for those looking to enjoy the tranquil beauty and subtle history of the Salland countryside, with convenient access and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife.
