Loop
“Winding through shimmering wetlands and historic windmills, this peaceful loop brims with birdlife and Dutch charm.”
Starting from the tranquil surroundings near the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, this loop trail covers approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Noorden, a short distance from the well-known visitor center Natuurmonumenten Nieuwkoopse Plassen, which serves as a useful landmark for navigation and parking.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Woerden or Alphen aan den Rijn, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 147 or 182) toward Noorden. The bus stop “Noorden, Kerk” is within walking distance of the trailhead. If driving, parking is available at the Natuurmonumenten visitor center (Dorpsstraat 116, 2431 CL Noorden), which is also a good spot to pick up maps or information before setting out.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop meanders through the heart of the Nieuwkoopse Plassen nature reserve, a landscape shaped by centuries of peat extraction and water management. The terrain is flat, with well-maintained paths and boardwalks crossing marshes, reed beds, and open water. Hikers should use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail conditions, as the area can be confusing due to the network of waterways and intersecting paths.
Nature and Wildlife
Expect to be surrounded by a mosaic of wetlands, home to an impressive array of birdlife. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen is a designated Natura 2000 site, renowned for its populations of purple herons, bitterns, and black terns. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times for birdwatching, especially near the De Voorn and De Kop lakes, which the trail loops around. Otters have also been reintroduced to the area, and with luck, you might spot their tracks along the water’s edge.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you’ll pass the historic polder windmills that once regulated water levels in the peatlands. These windmills are a testament to Dutch ingenuity in land reclamation and water management, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Interpretive signs along the route provide insight into the region’s history and the ongoing efforts to preserve its unique ecosystem.
At roughly the halfway point, a small observation tower offers panoramic views over the lakes and reed beds—a perfect spot for a rest and some photography. Benches and picnic tables are scattered along the route, making it easy to pause and enjoy the peaceful scenery.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The paths are mostly gravel or compacted earth, with several stretches of wooden boardwalk. Waterproof footwear is recommended, especially after rain, as some sections can be muddy. There are no significant climbs or descents, and the route is suitable for families and less experienced hikers. Bring binoculars for birdwatching and a camera to capture the expansive Dutch skies reflected in the water.
Restrooms and refreshments are available at the visitor center at the start and end of the loop, but there are no facilities along the trail itself. Carry water and snacks, and be prepared for changeable weather—wind and rain are common in this open landscape.
