Point-to-Point
“Stroll beneath ancient trees and birdsong, where Gelderland’s history and wild beauty quietly entwine.”
Starting from the charming village of Brummen, the trailhead is conveniently located near the ABK Huis, a well-known local landmark. Brummen is easily accessible by train, with regular services from Zutphen and Arnhem, and the station is just a short walk from the starting point. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the ABK Huis or in the village center.
Setting Out from ABK Huis The route begins at the historic ABK Huis, a stately building surrounded by mature trees and manicured lawns. As you leave the grounds, the path quickly transitions into quiet country lanes and leafy tracks. The terrain is flat throughout, with virtually no elevation gain—expect a gentle stroll suitable for all fitness levels, covering approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles).
Hallseweg and Rural Scenery Heading south along Hallseweg, you’ll pass through a patchwork of meadows and small woodlands. This area is typical of the Gelderland countryside, with hedgerows, grazing sheep, and the occasional thatched farmhouse. Keep an eye out for kestrels and buzzards circling overhead, and in spring, the hedgerows are alive with songbirds. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to track your progress and ensure you stay on course.
Trekvogelpad Section A highlight of this walk is the brief section along the Trekvogelpad, one of the Netherlands’ most famous long-distance trails. This stretch is particularly rich in birdlife, as the name (“Migratory Bird Path”) suggests. Depending on the season, you might spot flocks of geese, herons, or even a rare stork. The path here is wide and sandy, bordered by wildflowers and tall grasses.
Landgoed Groot Engelenburg The final approach brings you to Landgoed Groot Engelenburg, a grand estate with a history dating back to the 17th century. The manor house, now a luxury hotel and golf course, is set amid landscaped gardens and ancient trees. The estate grounds are open to walkers, and the terrace café is a popular spot to rest and enjoy views over the lawns and water features.
Historical and Natural Highlights This region of Gelderland is steeped in history, with estates like Groot Engelenburg reflecting the area’s aristocratic past. The landscape has been shaped by centuries of agriculture and forestry, and many of the old lanes and dikes you’ll follow have been in use for hundreds of years. Wildlife is abundant, especially in the quieter stretches between Brummen and the estate.
Practical Information The entire route is on well-maintained paths and quiet roads, making it accessible year-round. There are no significant climbs, and the total elevation gain is negligible. Public transport links are excellent, with Brummen station just a few minutes from the start and taxis available at the finish if needed. Refreshments are available at both the start and end points, and benches along the way offer opportunities to pause and enjoy the scenery.
