Loop
“Wander beneath leafy canopies, past whispering waterways and historic echoes, through the tranquil heart of Utrechtse Vecht.”
Starting just outside the village of Groenekan, this easy 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk through the heart of the Utrechtse Vecht region, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for beginners or anyone seeking a relaxed day outdoors. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Groenekanseweg, close to the intersection with the N417, making it accessible by both car and public transport. Buses from Utrecht Centraal stop at Groenekan, from where it’s a short walk to the starting point.Getting Oriented and NavigationFor navigation, HiiKER provides a reliable digital map of the route, ensuring you stay on track through the varied landscapes. The path is well-marked, but having HiiKER on your phone is recommended, especially as some sections cross quiet rural roads and forested lanes.Woodlands, Waterways, and Open FieldsThe first stretch leads you through the lush woodlands of the Groenekanse Bos, where mature oaks and beeches provide a canopy overhead. In spring and summer, listen for woodpeckers and spot squirrels darting through the undergrowth. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail opens up to the characteristic Dutch polder landscape: wide, flat meadows crisscrossed by drainage ditches and canals. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for herons, storks, and, if you’re lucky, the rare kingfisher along the water’s edge.Historic Groenekan and the WaterlineAt around 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll pass near the village of Groenekan itself. This area is steeped in history, lying close to the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, a 19th-century defensive waterline designed to flood the land and protect the city of Utrecht from invaders. Remnants of bunkers and sluices can be seen along the route, offering a glimpse into the region’s strategic past.De Leijen Nature ReserveContinuing north, the trail skirts the edge of the De Leijen nature reserve. This tranquil area is known for its reed beds and wet meadows, supporting a variety of wildflowers and butterflies in summer. The reserve is also home to grazing cattle and sheep, which help maintain the open landscape. Benches along this section provide a peaceful spot to rest and take in the views.Return via Rural LanesThe final stretch loops back along quiet country roads and tree-lined avenues, passing traditional Dutch farmhouses and small orchards. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this section especially pleasant for families or those with limited mobility.Practical TipsThere are several picnic spots along the route, but facilities are limited, so bring water and snacks. The nearest shops and cafés are in Groenekan and the nearby village of Maartensdijk. Public toilets are available at the start and finish near Groenekan. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially in the nature reserve. This hike is accessible year-round, though waterproof footwear is advisable in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches in the meadows. For up-to-date trail conditions and route details, consult HiiKER before setting out.
