Nature and Wildlife
The Rondje de Ravenswaarden and Drie Kieften Route is renowned for its rich biodiversity. The floodplains of the IJssel are a haven for birdwatchers, especially during spring and autumn migrations. Look out for spoonbills, storks, and various species of geese and ducks. The meadows are dotted with wildflowers in late spring and summer, attracting butterflies and bees. Grazing cattle and Konik horses are often seen in the reserve, helping to maintain the landscape’s natural balance.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At roughly 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you’ll reach the heart of the Ravenswaarden nature reserve, a protected area known for its rare wetland habitats. Around the halfway mark, the Drie Kieften area provides a tranquil spot for a break, with benches and interpretive signs explaining the local ecology.
Historical Significance
The IJssel floodplains have a long history of human settlement and water management. Dikes and drainage channels, some dating back to the Middle Ages, are visible along the route. The area played a crucial role in protecting the city of Deventer from flooding, and remnants of old farmsteads and traditional Dutch polder landscapes can still be seen.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The entire route is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it suitable for families and those seeking a leisurely walk. Surfaces vary from paved dike roads to grassy and sometimes muddy paths, especially after rain. Waterproof footwear is recommended in wet conditions. There are no significant technical challenges, but be prepared for open stretches exposed to wind and sun.
