Loop
“Wander past spring-fed brooks, blooming meadows, and storybook villages in South Limburg’s gentle embrace.”
Nestled in the rolling hills of South Limburg, this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circular walk begins near the heart of Gulpen, a charming Dutch village known for its historic brewery and scenic countryside. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy route is perfect for walkers of all abilities, offering a gentle introduction to the region’s lush landscapes and cultural heritage.
Getting There
Gulpen is well-connected by public transport. Buses from Maastricht and Heerlen stop at Gulpen’s central bus station, just a short walk from the trailhead. If arriving by car, parking is available near the Gulpener Bierbrouwerij (Brouwerijstraat 2, 6271 BW Gulpen), a well-known local landmark and a convenient starting point for your hike.
Through Pastoral Valleys and Historic Villages
The loop leads you south from Gulpen, following quiet country lanes and grassy footpaths bordered by hedgerows and wildflowers. After about 1.5 km (0.9 miles), you’ll reach Wittem, home to the striking Redemptorist Monastery. This 18th-century religious site, with its impressive neo-Gothic church, is a highlight for history enthusiasts and offers a peaceful spot for a short rest.
Continuing onward, the route meanders through the Bronnenland, or “Land of Springs,” a region famed for its natural springs and clear brooks. The area is dotted with small farms and orchards, and in spring and summer, the meadows are alive with butterflies and songbirds. Keep an eye out for the rare kingfisher along the Geul River, which you’ll cross at several points.
Epen and the Land of Springs
At roughly 4 km (2.5 miles), the path brings you to the outskirts of Epen, a picturesque village known for its half-timbered houses and traditional Limburg architecture. Epen is also a gateway to the region’s unique “bronnen” (springs), which have shaped the landscape for centuries. Interpretive signs along the route explain the geological history and the importance of these springs to local agriculture and wildlife.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any recent trail updates. Paths are mostly gravel or grass, with occasional muddy patches after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, but no technical gear is required.
Wildlife and Seasonal Highlights
This region is a haven for birdwatchers, with buzzards, woodpeckers, and sometimes even owls spotted in the wooded sections. In autumn, the hedgerows are heavy with blackberries and sloes, while spring brings a riot of wildflowers to the meadows.
Cultural and Culinary Stops
Both Gulpen and Epen offer inviting cafés and bakeries, perfect for sampling Limburgse vlaai (fruit tart) or a local beer after your walk. The Gulpener Bierbrouwerij, near the start and finish, is a popular spot to learn about the area’s brewing traditions.
This gentle loop through South Limburg’s valleys and villages is ideal for a relaxed day out, combining natural beauty, local history, and the warm hospitality of the Dutch countryside.
