Loop
“Stroll beneath whispering pines, past grazing sheep and timeless windmills, in Twente’s patchwork countryside.”
Starting from the outskirts of Enschede, near the recognizable landmark of Usselo’s old windmill, this circular route covers approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trail is well-marked and mostly flat, weaving through a mix of rural landscapes, small woodlands, and open fields typical of the Twente region.
Getting There
Reaching the trailhead is straightforward. If arriving by public transport, take a train to Enschede Central Station. From there, local buses head toward Usselo, with stops near the windmill, which is a short walk from the start of the route. For those driving, parking is available near the windmill and along the quiet village roads.
Route Highlights and Navigation
The path begins by skirting the edge of Usselo, a village known for its agricultural heritage and the historic Usselo Windmill, a well-preserved structure dating back to the 19th century. This windmill is a notable landmark and a great spot for photos before you set off. The trail quickly transitions into open countryside, where you’ll pass fields dotted with grazing sheep and traditional Dutch farmhouses.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) in, the route enters a small patch of woodland. Here, the canopy provides shade and a chance to spot local birdlife such as woodpeckers and finches. The undergrowth is rich with wildflowers in spring and summer, and the air is often filled with the scent of pine and earth.
Nature and Wildlife
The landscape is a patchwork of meadows and hedgerows, supporting a variety of wildlife. Hares and rabbits are commonly seen darting across the fields, and in the early morning or late afternoon, deer may be spotted at the woodland edges. The area is also home to several species of butterflies and dragonflies, especially near the small streams that cross the route.
Historical and Cultural Points
Usselo is notable for the “Usselo horizon,” a thin layer of soil discovered in the area that has provided important archaeological insights into the region’s prehistoric climate and human activity. While the layer itself isn’t visible from the trail, interpretive signs in the village offer background on its significance. The route also passes several traditional Saxon farmhouses, some of which date back centuries and reflect the rural architecture of Twente.
Trail Surface and Navigation
The path is a mix of paved village roads and well-maintained dirt tracks, suitable for walking shoes or light hiking boots. There are no significant climbs or descents, and the route is accessible year-round, though it can be muddy after heavy rain. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any recent updates or detours.
Facilities and Refreshments
There are limited facilities directly on the trail, but Usselo village has a small café and a bakery, perfect for a pre- or post-hike snack. Benches are scattered along the route, offering places to rest and enjoy the peaceful countryside views.
This easy, scenic loop is ideal for a relaxed half-day outing, offering a blend of natural beauty, rural charm, and a touch of local history.
